Municipal solid waste is currently managed by different organizations/agencies, in a somewhat uncoordinated manner. The Municipal Corporation of Gurgaon (MCG) is responsible for the collection, transportation, and disposal of waste generated within the municipal limit; Haryana Urban Development Authority (HUDA) manages the waste generated in the HUDA sectors; residential apartments, built by realty companies, have their own arrangements and the urban villages have contracted out waste management. Disposal of solid waste at vacant residential/commercial plots/along the road in the Aravali Hills is a regular, unwelcome practice. The waste collected by contractors hired by realty companies and urban villages is often disposed of in vacant nearby land pockets. In all this, public participation is either limited or non-existent. Recognizing the lack of coordination and infrastructure, several residential colonies have taken charge and implemented self-managed solid waste management programs. Many apartment complexes have set up dedicated solid waste treatment units; select pockets of communities living in individual homes/bungalows have put up community composting solutions.
